How to Take Accurate Saree Blouse Measurements When Shopping Online

Professional tailor taking saree blouse shoulder and bust measurements

A beautiful saree blouse begins with dependable measurements. When shopping online, the goal is not to pull the tape tightly or reproduce a favourite garment blindly—it it is to record your body accurately, identify the desired blouse shape and compare those details with the product information.

Before you begin

Use a flexible measuring tape, wear a well-fitting non-padded bra or the foundation garment planned for the blouse, and stand naturally. Ask another person to measure you if possible. Keep the tape level, comfortably close and untwisted.

1. Bust circumference

Measure around the fullest part of the bust with the tape parallel to the floor. Do not hold your breath or compress the body. This is a body measurement; the finished blouse requires suitable ease depending on fabric and construction.

2. Underbust

Measure directly below the bust. This helps with fitted, corset-inspired and structured blouse shapes and can clarify where darts or seams should sit.

3. Shoulder width

Measure across the back from one natural shoulder point to the other. Incorrect shoulder width often causes a neckline to pull, sleeves to twist or the garment to slip.

4. Blouse length

Measure from the highest shoulder point down to where you want the blouse to end. Consider the saree’s waist placement and how much midriff coverage you prefer.

5. Front and back neckline depth

Measure vertically from the shoulder’s highest point to the desired neckline point. Record front and back separately and describe the shape—round, V, square, sweetheart or high neck.

6. Armhole and upper arm

Measure around the armhole path without pulling tightly, then around the fullest part of the upper arm. Allow comfortable movement, especially for embroidered or non-stretch fabric.

7. Sleeve length and opening

Measure from the shoulder point to the intended sleeve end, following the arm. Record the circumference at that ending point so the cuff does not pinch.

8. Waist or blouse hem

Measure where the blouse will finish, not automatically at the narrowest waist point. This is important for longer blouses and tightly fitted styles.

Body measurement versus garment measurement

Your body numbers and a finished blouse’s flat measurements are not interchangeable. Product charts may describe the body the garment is designed to fit or the garment itself. Read the chart heading, construction and stretch notes; contact the store if the method is unclear.

Common measurement mistakes

  • Measuring over bulky clothing.
  • Pulling the tape too tight.
  • Using an old blouse that no longer fits well.
  • Forgetting the intended bra or foundation garment.
  • Recording neckline depth without specifying its shape.
  • Ignoring arm movement and sleeve comfort.
  • Assuming every brand uses the same chart.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure myself or a blouse?

Body measurements are the safest starting point. A well-fitting blouse can provide useful garment measurements, but identify clearly which method you used.

How tight should the tape be?

It should lie flat against the body without compressing it. You should be able to breathe and stand naturally.

What if I am between options?

Compare the exact chart, fabric and alteration possibilities, then ask customer care for product-specific guidance before ordering.
